Resident Wellness

The Emergency Medicine Residency Program is deeply committed to resident wellness, recognizing that personal well-being is essential to ºÚÁÏÂÛ̳ growth and high-quality patient care. Our comprehensive wellness curriculum includes structured discussions, lectures, and gamified sessions on financial, emotional, social, spiritual, and physical wellness, integrated throughout the year in weekly conference.

We host quarterly wellness Wednesdays, which are protected half-days free from clinical duties. These are free for residents to use as they see fit, including attending appointments and taking care of life responsibilities. Chief residents also schedule social events during these times for the residents to spend time together.

Each year, residents also participate in class-specific retreats designed to foster reflection, connection, and renewal at every stage of training. These retreats are protected time away from clinical duties, allowing residents to step back from the fast pace of emergency medicine and focus on personal growth, team building, and wellness. These sessions include education on topics such as board certification and the job search, as well as guided discussions, goal-setting workshops and peer support sessions.

Outside of the hospital, our residents can enjoy the outdoors year-round, as Mobile usually has mild winters. The Mobile-Tensaw Delta has 48,000 acres to explore and provides numerous areas for camping, hunting, fishing, kayaking and canoeing. Downtown Mobile boasts a variety of craft breweries and local restaurants featuring fresh Gulf seafood, Southern fare and world-class cuisine. After their shifts, residents enjoy grabbing meals together and walking around our eclectic downtown. Mobile is also near some of the Gulf Coast’s most beautiful beaches, including Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Pensacola Beach and Destin. Our residents regularly enjoy relaxing trips to the beach on their days off.

Finally, what truly sets our program apart is the close-knit culture shared by our residents and faculty. We pride ourselves on a collaborative and inclusive environment where everyone knows each other by name, support is always just a conversation away, and mentorship grows naturally from strong personal relationships. This sense of camaraderie is at the heart of our wellness philosophy.
